UNESCO and the EU will award 24 scholarships to young people from the Caribbean for specialized courses on cinema and television in Cuba
The programme Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, implemented by UNESCO and funded by the European Union, has announced a call for 24 scholarships aimed at young Caribbean culture professionals. The scholarships will enable participation in face-to-face courses at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. This institution is a member of the Caribbean Cultural Training Hub, created by the Transcultura programme to boost the professionalization of the cultural and creative sectors in the region.
The courses offered in this call cover topics relating to the audiovisual and interactive media sphere and more specifically, sound editing and screenwriting. The courses will last 2 weeks (60 teaching hours in double sessions) from 17 to 28 June 2024. The courses will be taught in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation into English and French.
Course Title : Introduction to film sound mixing in stereo and multi-channel formats.
- What will you have learned by the end of the course? : The operation and use of techniques and equipment used in the mixing studio. Pro Toolssimulations in each of the processes to be analysed. Practical work sessions in a mixing studio where participants perform segments of projects applying what was learnt. Students operate the equipment, and the teacher highlights important aspects as they come into play.
- What are the requirements to enrol on the course?
- Basic knowledge of Pro Tools digital audio editing software.
- Proven experience in projects involving sound creation and finalization processes for audiovisuals.
Course Title : Soundtrack design. Multichannel music recording and mix.
- What will you have learned by the end of the course? : Show in a theoretical-practical way what are the basic expressive components and the sound structure for the Design of the CREATION of cinematographic musical narrative, as well as, in a practical way, essential musical concepts for musical editing and mix. It includes room capture as well as mixing and mastering of soundtracks.
- What are the requirements to enrol on the course?
- Sound workers and professionals, sound engineers by trade; graduates of film and television schools and/or linked to the audiovisual medium; editors, directors or sound engineers with little or no musical training.
- Show some experience in projects implying sound creation and termination for audiovisuals
This call is addressed to young culture professionals (who are graduates or have work experience) from 18 to 35, citizens and residents in one of the programme’s 17 beneficiary countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Through its scholarship scheme, Transcultura will cover the academic costs, transport (return trip to and from Havana) and accommodation as per the call for applications’ terms and conditions.

This call corresponds to the fourth round of courses offered by the Caribbean Cultural Training Hub since its creation in 2021, and it is the second delivered in a face-to-face modality. To date, Transcultura has granted over 600 scholarships for the cultural and creative training of professionals from the 17 beneficiary countries of the programme through 32 face-to-face and online courses.
