Architect of Caribbean Media Thought and Practice
Few individuals have shaped Caribbean media education, policy, and scholarship as profoundly as Professor Aggrey Brown. A pioneering academic, media practitioner, researcher, and public intellectual, Brown’s contributions continue to influence the region’s communication landscape more than a decade after his passing.
Born in Jamaica in 1941, Professor Brown’s academic journey took him from Cornwall College to Hamline University and ultimately Princeton University, where he earned both Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Political Science. After teaching at prestigious American institutions including Princeton, Howard, Rutgers, and City University of New York, he returned to Jamaica in 1974 with a vision to strengthen Caribbean scholarship and communication.
His most enduring legacy is undoubtedly his leadership of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at The University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. Serving first as Acting Director in 1979 and later as Director, Brown transformed the institution into the region’s premier centre for media and communication studies. The curricula that trained generations of Caribbean journalists, broadcasters, communication specialists, and media managers bear his intellectual imprint.
Professor Brown was unique in bridging theory and practice. He was not only an accomplished scholar but also an active media professional—working as a radio announcer, television cameraman, newspaper columnist, commentator, and host of the influential Jamaican radio and television programme The Public Eye. This practical experience informed his teaching and research, allowing him to connect academic inquiry with the realities of Caribbean media.
His scholarship addressed critical issues that remain relevant today: media ownership and concentration, cultural identity, communication policy, technological change, media’s role in development, and the impact of globalization on Caribbean societies. Long before the digital revolution transformed communication, Brown was examining the implications of information technologies and advocating for policies that would enable Caribbean people to participate meaningfully in the global information society.
Professor Brown’s influence extended beyond academia. He advised regional and international organizations including CARICOM, UNESCO, and the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, helping to shape media policy and development throughout the Caribbean.
Today, as Caribbean media navigate digital transformation, questions of cultural sovereignty, media access, artificial intelligence, and the rise of global communication networks, Brown’s work remains remarkably prescient. His commitment to media education, regional integration, and communication for development continues to guide scholars, practitioners, and policymakers across the Caribbean.
