CBU Partners With UNESECO For Its 2026-2027 Global El Niño Initiative

The Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) is partnering with UNESCO and the Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC) to help regional media turn scientific information on El Niño 2026–2027 into practical reporting for Caribbean communities.

A consultation with editors, journalists and media managers featured a message from UNESCO’s Director-General and introduced two key areas of support: the Weekly El Niño Caribbean Briefing and a Science-to-Story Lab being developed to connect journalists with scientists and strengthen reporting skills.

The weekly briefing will provide credible scientific information, regional research, expert contacts and potential story angles. Its first edition focuses on water, with further topics exploring how El Niño can affect everyday life, including education, food security and public health.

CBU President Anthony Greene highlighted the media’s responsibility to explain risks, separate facts from speculation and hold those responsible for preparedness and response accountable. CBU committed to sharing the briefings with members across 20 Caribbean countries and territories and announced new El Niño reporting categories for its 38th Caribbean Media Awards.

Participants stressed the importance of clear language, local relevance and sustained access to experts. Newsrooms were also encouraged to nominate focal points and help shape the initiative through feedback.
