On October 30, 2024, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) in collaboration with the Network of Caribbean Chambers of Commerce (CARICHAM) hosted an insightful webinar exploring the dynamics between traditional and social media advertising in the Caribbean. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by public and independent media in vulnerable, small island developing states (SIDS), the event addressed the critical balance these media houses must maintain: producing relevant public service content for their audiences while ensuring financial sustainability through advertising.
The webinar delved into the impact of social media’s rise, which has led many Caribbean businesses to reallocate advertising budgets from legacy media such as print, radio, and television to digital platforms. Through case studies and in-depth discussions, business participants gained insights into the advantages and limitations of different media formats for advertising. At the same time, advertising professionals from both traditional and social media backgrounds heard firsthand from business leaders about their advertising decision-making processes.
This joint effort aimed to foster greater understanding and collaboration between the Caribbean media sector and business community, navigating a changing landscape with shared insights and strategies for success.
