On August 13, 2024, the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago (NGC) CBU Caribbean Media Awards Gala event transmitted live from Belize, will include an award for print journalism and television journalism under the theme: Healthy Nutrition Food Policy.  The prize will include a trophy as well as a BBD $2,000.00 bursary for the Award winners each, to produce additional material under the theme. This year, the HCC will also sponsor the travel and accommodation of the two (2) winners in the theme category: Healthy Nutrition Food Policy; Print and Television, to attend the Awards.

The eligible entries for the HCC-supported Award will explore regional healthy food policies including regulating school food environments, particularly  through the restriction or  ban on the sale and marketing of ultra-processed food products in schools (including sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs)); fiscal policies to make healthy foods more affordable while deterring consumption of unhealthy ultra-processed food products through taxation such as the introduction of or increase in SSB taxes of at least 20%; and strengthening food labelling through the introduction of octagonal ‘high-in’ warning labels on pre-packaged foods  using the PAHO nutrient profile model.

This category is open to all print and television media, whether or not they are CBU members, operating from: Anguilla; Antigua and Barbuda; the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands; the Commonwealth of Dominica; Grenada; Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat; St. Kitts & Nevis; St. Lucia; St. Vincent & the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; and the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Entries must have been published between January 1 and December 31, of 2023 and can be submitted through to February 29, 2024.

In welcoming the continued partnership with the CBU, HCC Communications Officer, Mrs. Sheena Warner-Edwards noted that “the HCC has been able to fortify direct engagement with the region’s media. In small developing settings such as those in the Caribbean, the media has been a major partner in the public health space. As partners, they have served as crucial health information vehicles. Their significant influence has led to increased awareness in and adoption of best public health practices, exemplified by the productive dialogue around and implementation of healthy nutrition food policies across the region”.

The 35th NGC CBU Caribbean Media Awards ceremony will take place on August 13th, 2024, in Belize, known for its coral islands, nature-hugging terrain, and the world’s second-longest barrier reef system.

Dr Claire Grant President of the CBU also welcomed the partnership with the CCCCC noting “This renewed partnership fits perfectly with the 55th CBU Assembly to be held in Belize from August 12 to 14, 2024 under the theme “Media and the Environment”.  Working with partners such as CCCCC helps the CBU continue to fulfil its mandate to the people of the region in delivering relevant content topics vital to the region’s survival”.

In 2023, the CBU received a record-breaking 355 entries, a 40% increase from 2022. This notable surge coincided with the CCCCC’s debut as a sponsor for awards in climate-related categories.

For over thirty years, the CBU has hosted its annual awards competition to recognize and honour the outstanding news and content produced by media houses and other content creators across the Caribbean in Dutch, English, French, and Spanish.  This year, entrants can submit their work in climate-related categories across various platforms, including television, print, and digital media.

The NGC Awards gala, supported by CCCCC and other partners, will be live-streamed from Placencia, Belize on Tuesday, August 13.

The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre is an inter-governmental Caribbean Community (CARICOM) institution that is mandated by the CARICOM Heads of Government to coordinate the Region’s response to climate change. We maintain the Caribbean’s most extensive repository of information and data on climate change specific to the region, which in part enables us to provide climate change-related policy advice and guidelines to CARICOM Member States.  In this role, the Centre is recognized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Environment Programme, and other international agencies as the focal point for climate change issues in the Caribbean. The Centre is also one of the few institutions recognized as a Centre of Excellence by United Nations Institute for Training and Research. CCCCC is empowering the Caribbean Community to act on climate change.

Provides Awards for Responsible Coverage of Youth in Crime and Trafficking in Persons

Bridgetown, Barbados: As part of its vital work on citizen security in the Eastern Caribbean, UNDP, through the CariSECURE 2.0 project, has joined with the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s (CBU) 35^th NGC Caribbean Media Awards to recognise journalism excellence.

CariSECURE 2.0 (Strengthening Evidence Based Decision Making for Citizen Security in the Caribbean) is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It aims to improve youth crime and violence policy-making and programming in the Eastern and Southern Caribbean through the use of quality, comparable and reliable national citizen security information, and aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 5: Gender Equality; and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

CariSECURE 2.0 is taking an innovative approach in line with the project’s objectives by partnering with the CBU to recognize Excellence in Responsible Reporting in two new categories: Youth Involvement in Crime and Trafficking in Persons (TIP).

Submitted news stories should demonstrate balanced and well-sourced insight on issues of youth involvement in crime in Barbados, Grenada, or Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, or a human-rights based approach to reporting or raising awareness of trafficking in persons (TIP) in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Saint Lucia, or Trinidad and Tobago, across print, television, radio, or digital platforms.

Highlighting a regional media assessment currently being undertaken by CariSECURE 2.0, Limya Eltayeb, Resident Representative of UNDP Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean noted, “The media has unparalleled ability to build public awareness, mobilise citizens and influence policy. Doing so ethically and responsibly is critical so that people better understand crime and violence from the perspective of human rights and social justice. By providing recognition and training for Caribbean journalists, CARISECURE 2.0 aims to enhance the media’s capacity to deliver data-driven, balanced and insightful reporting – especially in areas of youth involvement in crime and trafficking, to ensure vulnerable individuals are not further victimized.”

In welcoming the new partnership with CariSECURE 2.0, CBU President, Dr. Claire Grant, recognised the project’s commitment to working with the CBU in its emphasis on Caribbean news professionals providing accurate and relevant information throughout the region.  She highlighted that, “As the premier media content competition in the region, the CMAs shine a spotlight on the important themes highlighted in the award-winning entries as well as the critical work by indigenous media dedicated to serving Caribbean audiences at home and in the diaspora.”

For more than three decades, the CBU has presented its Awards to showcase outstanding work by regional media.  This year the title sponsor is the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago (NGC). The NGC CBU Awards Gala will be transmitted live on broadcast and digital platforms on August 13 from Belize.
