The Caribbean Broadcasting Union is pleased to announce the winners of the 37th CBU Media Awards.

On Wednesday, August 19, ninety-two (92) Award and Special Mention winners were revealed live in an event telecast and streamed to audiences across the region from the Atlantic Suites at the Hyatt in Georgetown, Guyana.

Winners from print, digital, and broadcast media in thirteen countries and territories of the English, French and Spanish Caribbean saw their names on screen during the ceremony.

Presentations of trophies and certificates were made in fifty-six (56) categories.  Of these twenty-two (22) – were themed categories supported by:

  • Massy Group
  • The Caribbean Culture Fund
  • UN Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean
  • UNICEF Belize
  • UNICEF Eastern Caribbean Area Office
  • The Nature Conservancy Caribbean Division,
  • Sagicor and
  • The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management

TOP PERFORMERS FROM BARBADOS AND JAMAICA

For the first time in the modern era of the CBU Media Awards, Barbados came out on top with a total of fifteen (15) Award wins and nine (9) Special Mention wins.  Barbados’ winning delegation comprised the Barbados Government Information Service with seven (7) Awards and one (1) Special Mention; The Nation Publishing Company with three (3) Awards and four (4) Special Mentions; Capital Media HD 99.3 on its first ever outing in the storied CBU competition taking three (3) Awards; Starcom Network two (2) Awards and one (1) Special Mention.  And three Barbadian entrants each earned a Special Mention on their first outing in the CMAs: Plan A Productions, the Barbados Community College and National Transformation Initiative (NTI).

Next in line was Jamaica with a total of fourteen (14) Awards and four (4) Special Mentions.  Traditional powerhouse the RJRGLEANER Communications Group was the top media house over all this year with thirteen (13) Awards and two (2) Special Mentions.  It was supported by the University of the West Indies Mona taking its first ever award in the brand-new student categories while the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica took home one (1) Special Mention.

Trinidad and Tobago demonstrated consistent quality with a total of six (6) Awards and nine (9) Special Mentions.  The main contributors were OCM stablemates the Express Newspaper and CCN TV6 with two (2) Awards and three (3) Special Mentions;  TTT Ltd with two (2) Awards as well as two (2) Special Mentions; Guardian Media with one (1) award and two (2) Special Mentions; Carnival Catwalk winning one (1) award on its premiere appearance in the competition; Parliament Channel with one (1) Special Mention on its return to the competition after some years away, and a swan song performance of one (1) Special Mention by Trinidad Newsday, which closed operations at the beginning of 2026.

As always Belize was among the standouts with five (5) Awards and four (4) Special Mentions. All but one of the wins was by traditional top achiever Greater Belize Media, while The National Channel (TNC) supported with one (1) Special Mention win.

This year’s host country Guyana was well represented with a total of four (4) Awards and three (3) Special Mentions.  Leading the Guyanese charge was News Room Inc which accounted for all four (4) of the Awards to the host country and two (2) Special Mentions.  Guyana Chronicle supported the side with one (1) Special Mention.

 

FIRST TIME ENTRANTS MAKE A STRONG IMPRESSION

A slew of first timers made excellent impressions on the judges this year. 

They included:

  • Riches Karayib of Martinique with two (2) Awards and two (2) Special Mentions
  • Lucia Times with two (2) Awards and one (1) Special Mention
  • API of Vincent and the Grenadines with one (1) Award and one (1) Special Mention, and
  • Compass TV of the Cayman Islands with three (3) Special Mentions
  • The British Virgin Islands Beacon copping one (1) Special Mention

The Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) is pleased to announce the nominees for the 37th CBU Media Awards, which recognise excellence in journalism, broadcasting, digital media, and content creation across the Caribbean.

This year’s nominees represent the outstanding work of media professionals and organisations from across the region, whose reporting, storytelling, production, and creative content continue to inform, educate, entertain, and inspire Caribbean audiences.

The nominations span a wide range of categories, including radio, television, print, digital media, student journalism, environmental reporting, arts and culture, child rights, financial literacy, and social media content creation.

Winners will be announced at the 37th CBU Media Awards Gala during the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s 57th Annual General Assembly (AGA 57), to be held in Georgetown, Guyana, from August 17–19, 2026.

The Caribbean Culture Fund (CCF) renewed its partnership with the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) for the Excellence in Media Coverage of Caribbean Arts and Culture category at this year’s 37th CBU Media Awards.

The award was first awarded in 2025 to recognise the vital role played by the region’s journalists to engage with and share Caribbean arts and culture to local and global audiences.

As Caribbean artists increasingly respond to issues such as migration, identity, social justice, community resilience and climate challenges, journalists help bring the public’s attention to artistic voices which might otherwise remain unheard outside their communities or national borders.

The award is open to media organisations operating across the Caribbean, and recognises reporting, criticism, features, and analysis on arts and culture in the Caribbean. Winners will be announced at the CBU Media Awards Gala in August 2026. The previous awards cycle received 48 entries from across the region.

CCF Executive Director Kellie Magnus said the partnership forms part of the Fund’s broader effort to amplify the work of Caribbean creatives.

“In the year since we launched these awards, the Caribbean has been hit by many challenges that reinforce how essential the arts are to reflect, protect, and strengthen our culture. We believe more than ever that journalism can help highlight the power of the arts and we are excited to see what is created” Magnus said.

The collaboration also reflects broader conversations taking place across the Caribbean about the importance of investing not only in artists, but in the wider systems that sustain cultural production, including media, criticism, documentation, and public discourse.

]]> Bridgetown, February 20.  Caribbean journalists continue to be central to efforts to advance equality, economic development and sustainability across countries, aimed ultimately at improving the lives and livelihoods of citizens from all walks of life.

In keeping with this shared commitment, the United Nations Barbados and Eastern Caribbean is pleased to support the continued advancement of the Global Goals through sponsorship of a new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Champion Award in this year’s Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s (CBU) Media Awards.

The award will recognize outstanding media contributions in print, radio, television, and digital media, that spotlight the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a blueprint for peace and prosperity for all.  Eligible entries will be from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines,

The UN will sponsor four award categories recognizing submissions that inspire action on the SDGs and align with national priorities.  Entries in radio, print, TV or digital formats should seek to connect the Global Goals to real people’s lives, communicate complex issues—such as climate change or inequality—in clear, accessible language, and foster an environment where the SDGs are actively championed. Where possible, content should be data-driven and solution-oriented.

UN Resident Coordinator Simon Springett said the UN Team is pleased to partner with the CBU and the media on this initiative.

“The media continues to be a valuable partner to us. We see this initiative as a continuation of our solid partnership, which we hope to strengthen by celebrating journalistic excellence that educates communities, drives sustainable development and inspires meaningful action.  Our goal is to support Caribbean countries in advancing progress on the global goals.”

CBU President Anthony Greene highlighted the Union’s close collaboration with UN agencies in the region.  He noted, “partnering with the UN Sub-regional Team for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean in the critical area of the SDG’s aligns well with the CBU’s mandate and identity as a contributor to regional development from a media and communications perspective.”

Entries for the 37th CBU Media Awards opened in late November 2025 and will close at midnight (ECT) on February 28, 2026. Nominees will be announced in May 2026, with the awards presentation scheduled for August 2026. The award recognises impactful media content that highlights real progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the Caribbean, showcasing storytelling that informs, inspires and drives positive change at national and regional levels.

Media professionals are encouraged to submit work that reflects innovation, inclusion, sustainability and social impact, and demonstrates the role of media in advancing the Global Goals.

The CBU is pleased to invite Caribbean print, digital, television and radio content creators to submit entries for the 37th edition of the CBU Media Awards.

This year’s competition features brand new categories for photographers with the introduction of Best News Photograph and Best Sports Photograph. CBU is also pleased to welcome media professionals in training with the introduction of five (5) categories dedicated to media and communications students.

And as announced recently there will be new categories rewarding SDG Champions sponsored by the UN Country Team for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean as well as Best Items on Child Rights, supported by UNICEF Eastern Caribbean Area Office.

The CBU is pleased to welcome back category sponsors, UNICEF Belize, The Nature Conservancy Caribbean Division, and the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management.

The closing date for entries is just weeks away, on February 28, 2026.    So potential entrants are invited to review the full list of categories as well as the eligibility rules and entry form  before submitting entries and forms online.

The winners will be announced and the prizes presented at the CBU Media Awards Gala in August 2026 during the 57th Annual General Assembly.

Entry and Eligibility Rules Highlights

Below are the key guidelines for submitting entries to the CBU Caribbean Media Awards. For comprehensive information on all categories, definitions, submission procedures, judging criteria, and the full timetable, please download the full rules here (PDF).

Who Can Enter?

  • CBU Members :Active CBU members in good financial standing may enter all applicable categories and are eligible for cash prizes where these are offered.
  • Non-Member Caribbean Entities and Individuals :
    • Non-member organisations or individuals operating from and serving a Caribbean country or territory (or multiple Caribbean territories) may enter in the categories for which they are eligible.
    • Where registered, they must be in compliance with applicable regulations in their home jurisdiction(s).
    • Non-members may submit entries to the Advertising Awards, but only for material transmitted on / published in CBU member media services and publications during the eligible period.
  • Advertising Agencies
    • Advertising agencies that are not CBU members may enter the Advertising Awards.
    • Entries must be advertisements or public service announcements (PSAs) carried on CBU member media during the eligible period.
  • Student Entrants
    • Student categories are open to individuals or groups officially enrolled (full- or part-time) in a recognised post-secondary or tertiary media/communications programme in the Dutch, English, French, or Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Graduates may enter qualifying work produced while they were students.

Prize Eligibility

  • Only entries submitted by CBU members in good financial standing at the time of entry are eligible for cash prizes in categories where cash awards are offered.
  • No cash prizes are awarded in the People’s Choice, Student, or Advertising Winners in these categories receive plaques and/or certificates.
  • Student winners in non-student categories may be eligible for cash prizes, bursaries, or other benefits where applicable.

Key Conditions for Submission

  1. All entries must be original productions by the submitting entities or individuals. Co-productions are allowed, but contributors to the content must be Caribbean; material from non-Caribbean entities may not exceed 25% of the overall entry.
  2. Entries must have been first produced and transmitted or published between January 1 and December 31, 2025.
  3. Content submitted and assessed in previous rounds of the competition cannot be re-entered
  4. Where archival footage is used, it must not exceed 50% of the total content of the entry.
  5. Where content generated by large language models/artificial intelligence (AI) is used, this must be disclosed on the entry form and must not exceed>20% of the total content of the entry.
  6. Entrants must be able to demonstrate that they retain the necessary authorial rights or have full authorisation from all contributors, and they agree to indemnify the CBU against any challenges to the use of submitted material.
  7. Entries will be disqualified if the selection criteria in the Rules, entry forms, or official directives from the CBU are not met.

Theme-Specific Awards and Geographic Eligibility

Some theme awards are restricted to entrants from specific countries or territories, based on the sponsoring organisation:

  • SDG Champion (UN Country Team for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean)
    Open only to eligible entities operating from: Anguilla; Antigua and Barbuda; Barbados; British Virgin Islands; Dominica; Grenada; Montserrat; St. Kitts & Nevis; Saint Lucia; Saint Vincent & the Grenadines.
  • UNICEF Belize Child Rights Champion Awards
    (including Investigative Reporting, Elimination of Violence Against Children, and Children Who Inspire) – open only to eligible entrants operating from Belize.
  • UNICEF Eastern Caribbean Area Office Child Rights Awards
    Open only to eligible entrants operating from: Anguilla; Antigua and Barbuda; Barbados; British Virgin Islands; Dominica; Grenada; Montserrat; St. Kitts & Nevis; Saint Lucia; Saint Vincent & the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; Turks & Caicos Islands.
  • Land Degradation Neutrality Awards (Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management)
    Open only to eligible entrants operating from CARICOM member countries and territories:

Additional Rules

  • Entries will not be accepted from individuals who are immediate family members of judges, sponsors, or CBU Secretariat personnel.
  • Non-members must pay a modest administrative fee when submitting entries, as outlined in the full rules.
  • As a condition of entry, CBU members and the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) are permitted to use submitted content on their services, platforms, and channels free of cost, with due credit to the submitting entity, for any publication or reasonably foreseeable use arising from the competition.
  • The CBU also has the right to use images and/or extracts from winning entries during live or delayed transmission of the Awards ceremony and for promotional/publicity purposes, including transmission/publication on CBU and CMC platforms and on CBU member media services (unless otherwise indicated by the submitting entity at the time of entry).

If you create TV, radio, print, or digital content about children and young people in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, or you’re studying media and communications, you’re invited to learn about the new categories of the upcoming CBU Media Awards, sponsored by the UNICEF Office for the Eastern Caribbean Area.

There will be two opportunities to attend this presentation:

  • In-person session (Barbados-based media professionals and media students): November 5  at the Courtyard by Marriott Barbados
  • Online session: November 12 via Zoom

During these sessions, UNICEF experts and media trainers will share insights on the themed Awards — including eligibility and what the judges will be looking for.
