Bridgetown, February 20. Caribbean journalists continue to be central to efforts to advance equality, economic development and sustainability across countries, aimed ultimately at improving the lives and livelihoods of citizens from all walks of life.

In keeping with this shared commitment, the United Nations Barbados and Eastern Caribbean is pleased to support the continued advancement of the Global Goals through sponsorship of a new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Champion Award in this year’s Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s (CBU) Media Awards.

The award will recognize outstanding media contributions in print, radio, television, and digital media, that spotlight the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a blueprint for peace and prosperity for all. Eligible entries will be from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines,

The UN will sponsor four award categories recognizing submissions that inspire action on the SDGs and align with national priorities. Entries in radio, print, TV or digital formats should seek to connect the Global Goals to real people’s lives, communicate complex issues—such as climate change or inequality—in clear, accessible language, and foster an environment where the SDGs are actively championed. Where possible, content should be data-driven and solution-oriented.

UN Resident Coordinator Simon Springett said the UN Team is pleased to partner with the CBU and the media on this initiative.

“The media continues to be a valuable partner to us. We see this initiative as a continuation of our solid partnership, which we hope to strengthen by celebrating journalistic excellence that educates communities, drives sustainable development and inspires meaningful action. Our goal is to support Caribbean countries in advancing progress on the global goals.”

CBU President Anthony Greene highlighted the Union’s close collaboration with UN agencies in the region. He noted, “partnering with the UN Sub-regional Team for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean in the critical area of the SDG’s aligns well with the CBU’s mandate and identity as a contributor to regional development from a media and communications perspective.”

Entries for the 37th CBU Media Awards opened in late November 2025 and will close at midnight (ECT) on February 28, 2026. Nominees will be announced in May 2026, with the awards presentation scheduled for August 2026.
17 October 2025 — The Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) has been officially approved as an NGO in partnership with UNESCO, with consultative status. This recognition, the first of its kind for an NGO from the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean, was warmly welcomed by Member States attending the 222nd session of UNESCO’s Executive Board in Paris.

Member States hailed this new status as an important achievement for the Union and a signal of encouragement for other NGOs in the Caribbean and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to strengthen their collaboration with UNESCO.

“Becoming an official partner of UNESCO is not just a badge of honour. It offers the CBU a seat at the global table — a stronger, direct voice in shaping cultural and media policy worldwide. And the world needs to hear the Caribbean’s voice,” said Eric Falt, UNESCO Representative for the Caribbean.

Anthony Greene, President of the CBU, highlighted the long and productive relationship between the two organizations:

“Since the very birth of CBU in 1970 with UNESCO’s support, our partnership has been instrumental in strengthening Caribbean media at home and ensuring our sector has a voice on the global stage.”

With its new consultative status, CBU will now join UNESCO’s broader family of NGOs worldwide to advance shared priorities in education, science, culture, and communication. Plans are already in motion:

Joint activities during Global Media and Information Literacy Week (24–31 October 2025).

Preparations for World Radio Day 2026, to be celebrated under the theme “Radio and Artificial Intelligence.”

About the CBU

Founded in 1970 with UNESCO’s support, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union is a regional, non-profit association comprising public service, independent, and community media service, media education institutions, and regulators. For more than five decades, it has worked to strengthen the Caribbean’s media and communications landscape, ensuring the region’s perspectives are heard internationally.

World Press Freedom Day, celebrated every year on May 3, acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.

Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint, or abolition, of press freedom. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the pursuit of a story.

This year, CBU is partnering with the Public Media Alliance (PMA) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) to run a workshop on digital security best practices.

It comes amid a rise in digital security threats to journalists in the region, and follows a presentation-based journalists’ safety event, co-hosted by CBU and PMA, with support from UNESCO in February, which considered the regional context and experiences of Caribbean journalists.

The follow-up 90-minute workshop will take place on May 28, from 10 – 11.30 EST via Zoom.

To be run by Ela Stapley of the Committee to Protect Journalists, it is intended to provide Caribbean journalists with the practical tools needed to protect themselves and their sources digitally. It will cover protecting personal online data, secure forms of communication, and spyware.

Participants will learn how to mitigate the risks of digital threats, including from legal requests for data and online abuse.

The event is extremely timely given the current state of press freedom. According to the just-released RSF World Press Freedom Index for 2025, although physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of press freedom, economic pressure is also a major, more insidious problem. The economic indicator on the Index now stands at an unprecedented, critical low as its decline continued in 2025. As a result, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a “difficult situation” for the first time in the history of the Index. The major decline is particularly evident in the Americas, where 22 of the region’s 28 countries saw their economic indicators drop.

In the Caribbean, the highest ranked country is Trinidad & Tobago, at 19, which climbed 6 levels, followed by Jamaica at 26 which dropped 2 places compared to 2024. Suriname slipped by four places to be ranked at 32 while Belize improved seven places year over year to land at 47. Guyana improved 4 places to rank 73rd. Given the all-out attack on media institutions in Haiti it was not surprising it dropped by 18 places to 111. Cuba is ranked lowest in the region at 165 despite improving slightly by 3 places compared to 2024.

The Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) notes with concern the recent threats against the life of Mark Bassant, Investigative Journalist associated with two of its member media houses in Trinidad and Tobago, CCN TV-6 and The Express Newspaper.

After addressing a similar issue in Jamaica just a few months ago in October 2024, CBU finds it unfortunate that it must re-iterate the need for freedom of information and freedom of the press.

Even as it observes the full-on assault on journalism being suffered by media professionals in CARICOM sister-nation Haiti, the CBU has noted the troubling increase in these types of incidents affecting news professionals throughout the region, as they seek to perform their public duties.

The CBU expresses wholehearted support for professional journalism and for the independence of the media in covering all aspects of society, including political issues.

In line with this commitment the CBU, recently partnered with the Public Media Alliance (PMA) and UNESCO to shine a spotlight on this negative trend during an online workshop on Caribbean Journalists Safety that took place on February 27, 2025. It was particularly heartening to collaborate with the Caribbean Court of Justice which under a recently signed MOU with UNESCO has also committed to building the capacity of the judiciary to address issues relating to media freedom and journalists’ safety.

The CBU will be extending its support for the profession in the Caribbean by a follow-up event, again in partnership with the Public Media Alliance to share tools and techniques to help keep news practitioners safe and able to carry out their duties so necessary to the region’s growth and sustainability.

The CBU reiterates its condemnation of unjustified attacks on media practitioners, wherever they may occur, since they can only serve to undermine one of the key pillars of democratic society and good governance, which is a fair and independent media sector.

At the 55th CBU Assembly last week Caribbean media executives, regulators, independent producers and media educators highlighted the need for the issue of climate change to be top of the agenda for the region.

With the full endorsement of the Prime Minister of Belize, the Hon John Briceno, and the Secretary General of CARICOM, Dr. Carla Barnett, the region’s media recommitted to ensuring audiences and stakeholders prioritised this issue.

Among the resolutions passed during the Plenary session, the members of the CBU agreed that in the same way programming and publications have dedicated spaces for, news, sports, business and weather content, the environmental threats to the existence of the Caribbean must be integrated into their productions.

The CBU members also took note of the advanced efforts of industry players outside of the region such as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, ZDF of Germany and the Public Media Alliance (PMA) to incorporate environmentally friendly and sustainable practices as part of their every-day operations.

In a significant move to bolster disaster preparedness and response in the Caribbean, UNESCO has partnered with the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) to enhance the broadcasting and editorial capacity of media outlets in two Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This initiative is particularly timely as the region faces the devastating impacts of Hurricane Beryl.

Within this partnership, UNESCO provided two sets of robust radio transmitters and antennas to two member broadcasters of CBU in Barbados, and Turks and Caicos. This enabled them to reach a larger population before, during and after climate emergencies, and to restore operations in the event of damage to their existing infrastructure during disasters. CBU will conduct comprehensive training with the beneficiary media, focusing on enhancing institutional strategies and practices on disaster preparedness, utilizing digital tools for news gathering, and improving programming on climate change.

“In the face of climate emergencies and disasters, timely and accurate information can help communities make informed decisions and save lives. Public interest media are an indispensable pillar in this endeavour. UNESCO remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing disaster resilience and supporting climate change adaptation of Member States in the Caribbean and other regions, by empowering media with the necessary tools and competencies.”

Tawfik Jelassi
Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO

CBU President, Dr Claire Grant, emphasized the media’s essential contribution to communities’ disaster resilience, especially in regions most vulnerable to natural hazards like the Caribbean:

“Too often it’s assumed that even in emergencies the media will still be able to operate normally. But as the Caribbean prepares itself for […] increasingly devastating hazards, being able to maintain transmission of the most accessible medium, radio, must be seen as a pillar of preparation, as well as relief and recovery efforts.”

Dr. Claire Grant
President, Caribbean Broadcasting Union

This initiative is part of UNESCO’s broader efforts to support SIDS media in climate action and disaster preparedness. Since 2022, the Organization has assisted media organizations in several SIDS, including the Bahamas, Fiji, Haiti, Marshall Islands, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Timor-Leste, and Tuvalu. In 2024, actions in this area are also underway in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. This new partnership builds on these efforts, reaffirming UNESCO’s commitment to empowering SIDS media as key actors in disaster risk reduction.

Dr Grant encouraged other development and private sector partners to provide tangible support, enhancing disaster preparedness of media in every Caribbean country or territory. CBU will highlight the partnership during its 55th Annual General Assembly, will take place in Placencia, Belize, from 11 to 14 August 2024, under the theme “Media and the Environment”.

The entries for the category will feature material published in 2024, and the winners will receive their Awards at the Gala to be held in August 2025, during the 56th CBU Annual General Assembly (AGA).

“[The CCF] aims to strengthen media practitioners’ understanding of the critical role the arts play in shaping Caribbean identity and future development and to encourage increased coverage of arts and culture across the region.” said Chair of the CCF, Ms. Michele Pierre Louis during a live online event on Thursday, June 13. She was joined in the event by Marielle Barrow, Executive Director of Caribbean InTransit and Christopher Cozier, visual artist, curator and writer.

The webinar also featured a prime example of globally recognised Caribbean culture coverage, the documentary “Kingston Kulcha” produced by Camille Barrett of RJRGLEANER Communications Group.

CBU Secretary General, Sonia Gill warmly welcomed the new partnership with CCF. She said, “The CBU’s membership is made up organisations who rely on the inherent value of indigenous creative content. Arts and Culture are part of the Caribbean’s unique value as well as the media’s competitive advantage in the face of massive international media institutions, so it’s a natural partnership between CCF and CBU.”

In announcing the Awards during the event, CCF Executive Director (Designate), Ms. Kellie Magnus said, “Caribbean media play a critical role in bringing the work of our creatives to their intended audiences. We hope that these awards will encourage experimentation and collaboration – that many new stories will be told about the breadth and depth of Caribbean art and culture.”

The CBU has been presenting the Caribbean Media Awards annually for more than 35 years to recognize the best content in print, digital, television and radio media houses in the Dutch, English, French and Spanish Caribbean.
